So, today I got some fundraising spam from Senator Schumer and the DSCC. I was about to delete it when I thought, what would happen if I wrote them a little note as a concerned voter. I shared the note I wrote with a friend, who recommended that I post it here, so I have posted the letter in its entirety. I would be amazed if anyone at the DSCC or Schumer's office answered, but I really do wonder what it would take to get a supposedly Democratic Congress to stop being supine in the presence of Republican determination to dismantle civil rights, the constitution, any privacy we enjoy, etc.
Dear Senator Schumer --
I just received an e-mail from the DSCC under your name regarding fundraising for the coming election cycle, encouraging me to contribute to the support of Democratic senate candidates.
I am a Democrat, for the lack of a better name for consistently progressive political values and positions in this country. I oppose this idiot war categorically. I support abortion rights, limitations on the encroachments of national security on civil rights, I support progressive taxation, a non-troglodyte Supreme Court and federal judiciary, environmental laws with teeth, gay rights, gay marriage, and limitations on the depredations of late stage capitalism to protect consumers and workers. I haven't missed a local or national election for over 20 years. I vote for Democrats and I give money to Democrats. And I write letters to you clowns asking you to support positions and take actions consonant with the aforementioned principles. And like Lucy, Charlie Brown, and the football, congressional Democrats screw me over every time. You don't stand up to the Republicans; you don't say "no" to their worst policies with any meaningful fortitude and consistency. You cavil and temporize and cave and roll over and don't seem to grasp that any less than complete and unrelenting opposition to them is going to fail. So why should I give you more money? Why?
Why did Democrats vote to pass the renewal of the Patriot Act? Why did you clowns let the Southwick nomination out of committee? Why aren't you supplying any meaningful opposition to the war? Why weren't you more disciplined in your push for DC voting rights? You have a majority. I want you to make the Republicans get 60 votes to go use the men's room. Can I be more clear? Can the Democrats in Congress be made to understand the nature of what we are up against in this country?
If someone can make me think that you are going to stop rolling over for Mitch McConnell, you might get some money from me this election cycle. But not until then.
Thank you.
